At Belgian Gardens State School the visual and performing arts program plays a significant role in supporting the enrichment of curriculum and performance for all students.
Instrumental music program
Students are offered the opportunity to learn to play instruments from the woodwind, percussion, brass groups, which commences in year 4 and strings lessons commence in year 3. All lessons are conducted by qualified music teachers.
Students are given weekly music lessons on their chosen instruments and regular opportunities to perform in events such as: fanfare, eisteddfod, community performances
A gala music evening is held as an end of year concert in November for students who have participated in the instrumental and chorister groups throughout the year. At this event, our talented musicians are recognised and reward for the contribution they have made to the “music program” at Belgian Gardens State School.
Groups developed from the instrumental program include:
Music students are invited to attend a three day instrumental workshop during the year and the choral students are also invited to attend a choral workshop for three days tuition.
Choirs
Students from years 2, 3 and 4 are invited to join the junior choir and the senior choir caters for students in years 5 and 6. Choirs perform at a variety of venues throughout the year as well as compete at the annual eisteddfod. The senior students for a glee club and perform at school functions and awards evenings.
Dance program
An arts extravaganza is held each year in November for students in years prep, 2, 4 and 6 to perform on stage at the civic theatre.
An outside provider is contracted to work with the teachers and students to develop a theme, dance moves and the music suitable for the theme chosen for their performance. Workshops are held weekly leading up to a rehearsal on stage at the civic theatre on the day and the final performance in the evening on the same day.
Visual arts
Students in years 1, 3 and 5 have a wonderful opportunity to work with professional artists in weekly workshops to produce some very unique and artistic pieces. The students are taught techniques to develop their skills and explore the boundless limits of their talents through this program.
A group of artists work with small groups of students, from each year to produce a range of artistic mediums that culminate in the display of the children’s finished work in an ‘arts ephemera’ that parents are invited to attend.
