Student council including young leaders program.
Belgian Gardens has a powerful and effective young leaders program established. It is a research based program that builds leadership capability and confidence and gives our students a voice in school decision making and direction setting.
The program commences in term 4 of each year through a nomination process that is transparent, open and inclusive. All students that successfully complete the nomination process are invited to participate in the young leaders mentoring program. Each nominee is matched with a mentor from the current young leaders who walk beside them in the leadership journey.
All young leaders are required to attend young leaders meetings held on Tuesday and Thursday for all of term 4 and the first month of term 1 each year. 100% attendance is required and a leadership program is implemented. The young leaders participate in a leadership challenge and a leadership workshop which can be an overnight experience or a full day. Throughout term 4 working with their mentor they engage with leadership and start to participate in leadership roles including parade and membership on focus groups.
In term 1 young leaders participate in an interview of social conscious. They are required to participate in a 15 minute interview with selected staff and an invited parent. All young leaders running for the position of school and house captains are required to prepare a speech that they deliver to all year 4 – 6. All student council leaders are required to prepare a speech to introduce themselves to p – 2 students.
Once elected all young leaders are inducted into their elected roles. This includes kidz club leaders who are elected by their peers through their own election process. Each young leader will be allocated a class that they are required to visit each week in consultation with the class’s teacher to share ideas and discuss student council activities with all students.
All student leaders meet each Thursday for a student council meeting.
